Emmanuel Tjeknavorian recording with DOMINANT PRO

Overview

50 years after the debut of Dominant, Thomastik-Infeld presents its latest string revolution: DOMINANT PRO

With this new product, Thomastik-Infeld are not aiming to change the basic character of DOMINANT, but rather to offer an additional, contemporary repertoire of strings.

  • Exceptionally powerful
  • Good balance of brilliance and warmth
  • Broad range of sound colours
  • Supports the radiance of the instrument in the long term
  • Reacts immediately with a focused sound core
  • A sound that fills the room
  • Bell-like tonal character
  • High resistance to bow pressure
  • Suitable for soloists
  • Very high level of dynamics – can be played very quietly and very loudly

Individual string character:

Carbon steel – Tin plated

Vibrating string length: 32,5cm | 12,8“

In comparison to the other E-strings, DP01SN [diameter 0.262 mm, 7.9 kg, removable ball end] has a smaller diameter and is therefore ideally suited to instruments with a normal or high string position (high bridge or lowered fingerboard). In comparison to the standard DP01, DP01SN is not underlaid with nickel and is therefore somewhat more susceptible to corrosion. Thanks to a thicker layer of tin, however, it sounds warmer than DP01 and much warmer than DP01AU and DP01PT.

DP01SN also has the lowest string tension of all DOMINANT PRO E-strings, which means that almost no strain is exerted on the instruments and they can be greatly opened in terms of sound. This leads to a good bow response and also promotes the instrument’s radiance. Its low string tension means that it has the lowest resistance to bow pressure of all the DOMINANT PRO E-strings.

What makes Dominant Pro so special?

DOMINANT PRO sound darker, more focused and respond more directly than Dominant strings. Despite their direct response, they give musicians the possibility to create a broad range of sound colours. The string tensions have been increased by an incremental amount to adapt the resistance to bow pressure to suit the extended playing requirements of musicians without overburdening their instrument.

DOMINANT PRO strings assert themselves very well against the sound of an entire orchestra and with corresponding dynamics and a capacity for modulation, they also offer excellent possibilities when used in chamber music.

Immediately after stringing, the DOMINANT PRO set DP100 sounds bell-like and fills the room. In the first three to five hours of playing, the strings feel a touch softer and sound a little warmer than they do for the rest of their lifespan. Then the strings open up, sound more brilliant and open, and feel a little tighter beneath the fingers. The bell-like sound that fills the room decreases slightly in the last third of the strings’ life and they sound more direct – from this point on, the tonal character of the strings barely changes.

"I am completely fascinated by the tonal warmth, balance and immense power radiated by these strings. I can warmly recommend these violin strings to all instrumentalists of every level."

Anton Sorokow, Violinist & First Concertmaster - Vienna Symphony Orchestra
